Panthers WR Steve Smith unhappy with QB Cam Newton
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Panthers receiver Steve Smith says he'' lit into'' Cam Newton about his actions on the sidelines when the young quarterback was replaced late in the fourth quarter of Thursday night's 36-7 blowout loss to the New York Giants.
Smith says he was upset when Newton remained sitting on the bench instead of watching backup Derek Anderson and trying to learn from his own mistakes.
Smith says he called Newton out so he could ``understand this is more than about playing football, it's about becoming a man and understanding this is what it's about.''
Smith says he hopes the lesson will pay off for Newton down the road.
The 23-year-old Newton has taken losses hard in the past and Smith says it's time for the QB to better handle adversity.
Brandon Williams But I agree with you guys.... Coaches should have spoken on this first
Brandon Williams Come on Cam u gotta grow up....you can be an all time great
Brandon Hayes It takes a village!!!
Otis Grigsby I like Smitty's passion. I like that he addressed the problem when it happened, but he could have given a good "no comment" when the media asked what was going on. The biggest thing that jumped out at me here was the fact that the coaches didn't address this before Smitty did.
Larry Stevens Yeh smith Is right but talking to him in person is better than calling him out in media
Brandon Sanders Cam starting off in unfamiliar territory... He will bounce back but I know he had some high expectations he just gonna have to grind it out get in that film room put in the extra hours and bust out like we all know he can!!!
Michael Blazitz steve smith is a great team mate hope cam gets the great advice he has been given . cam the game is a lot more than you . it was there before you and will be there long after your gone . look back at players think there all that . my advice to your future spend time with your great team mate steve smith . listen do not talk .
Chris Jones Cam knows he is the starter so why sweat it. Don't get so big headed to where you lose character. This is your team and a lot of eyes are on you.
Orson Mobley Good stuff, Cam should appreciate have a team mate like Steve Smith, that's what being a leader is all about
